Monstera - Popular houseplant for a reason

Monstera is a must for anyone who loves tropical houseplants. Monstera often has large, lobed leaves and can grow really big. It is a fantastic large houseplant with many different varieties that suit both beginners and experts. New shoots can be pruned and grown as cuttings.

Monstera care

It's a fairly easy houseplant to care for, as long as you follow a few basic tips. Well-drained soil, regular watering, and pruning when necessary are important to keep it healthy and lush.

  • Watering: Monstera thrives best when the soil is allowed to dry out a bit between waterings. If you water your plant too much, it can get brown spots on the leaves or completely brown leaves, so keep an eye on the soil moisture.
  • Soil: Use a well-drained soil mix for Monstera , preferably with lots of perlite or orchid bark. The soil also needs to be relatively nutritious. We like worm castings and often mix this into the soil when replanting Monsteras. Let the soil dry out between waterings.
  • Light: A Monstera plant likes to be in bright light but not in direct sunlight. Watch out for direct sunlight which can burn the leaves, causing them to turn brown and fall off. Remove these leaves to make room for new growth.
  • Aerial roots : Monstera has aerial roots that help it absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. We recommend not cutting these off because the aerial roots are important. They also provide a way for the plant to climb and are helpful when tying up the monstera. Press the aerial roots down into the pot and you will help the plant feel good!
  • Plant support: Monstera likes support such as a moss stake to anchor its aerial roots. A plant support is a good solution to help the plant grow large leaves.
  • Repotting: When the roots fill the entire pot, it is time to repot the plant in a larger pot. We use only clear plastic pots because the health of the roots can be seen through the pot. White roots are healthy, while brown or black roots indicate root rot. You can buy cheap plastic pots here.
  • Pests & Diseases: To avoid pests on your Monstera plant, make sure to always use a good soil and inspect your plant regularly. Should you encounter pests, such as thrips or spider mites, quick treatment can prevent major damage. As a preventative measure against pests, we use beneficial animals .
  • Nutrition: Feed the plant regularly if you use liquid nutrition when watering. We prefer to fertilize with vermicompost by mixing it into the topsoil a couple of times a year. When repotting the plant, we make sure the new soil contains plenty of fertilizer.
  • Temperature: These plants thrive best at room temperature.
  • Location: We recommend that you keep a small monstera indoors all year round. However, you can place a monstera outdoors in the summer if the plant is large and well-established in its pot. Just make sure that the plant is in the shade and protected from strong winds.
  • Pruning: By taking cuttings you can easily keep the monstera at a reasonable size. Old brown dead leaves can also be cut off. Regular pruning contributes to bushier growth with the possibility of also expanding the plant collection with cuttings.
  • Fruit: A large monstera can flower and produce an edible fruit. This is especially true of Monstera deliciosa 'Swiss cheese plant' which is the variety known for its fruits and large hollow leaves. When ripe, the fruit tastes like Jackfruit and Pineapple and has white flesh.

Take cuttings from Monstera!

Monstera is easy to propagate from cuttings. To do this successfully, cut the cutting just below a node (the point where new shoots emerge) on the stem. Take a cutting from the top two nodes, which is called a top cutting. Top cuttings will root and start growing faster than stem cuttings when it comes to Monstera.

It is perfectly fine to plant your cuttings in soil, but we recommend starting by putting your cutting in water first. Let the Monstera cutting root in the water before planting it in well-drained soil. A small cutting can eventually become a large, beautiful potted plant.
