Monstera dubia , a climbing plant flat against the substrate.
Monstera dubia has perhaps the most striking and unusual growth habit of all the monsteras. As a young 'juvenile' the leaves grow flat against the substrate. It is only when the monstera feels anchored that it completely changes appearance to its 'mature form'. The leaves twist, become lobed and grow up to 1 m long!
The ones we sell here are juvenile plants whose aerial roots have anchored themselves to a sturdy plant support.
Botanical description.
Monstera dubia is native to much of Central and South America . From the Mexican state of Chiapas to tropical South America . Although Monstera dubia is a common and abundant species, it is found in scientific collections worldwide in less than 80 specimens.

Appearance.
Monstera dubia is a beautiful plant that grows at low altitudes and climbs or hangs from large trees. The adult stage varies and depends partly on the type of tree it grows on. The first adult leaves are entire, and if the plant is growing on insufficient support, it may flower at this stage.
But if it is allowed to grow on a large tree ( stable plant support ), it will first produce whole leaves, then divided leaves, and finally perforated leaves that grow up to 1 meter long!
In its juvenile phase, the plant produces small leaves that lie flat against pieces of wood and trunks or rocks. As the plant matures, it produces large leaves with the typical fenestrations common to other species of Monstera. The plant can climb up to 25 m in the wild.
Care.
Like most other monstera species, this variety prefers moist but well-drained soil and some humidity. When it climbs, it should be supported or allowed to climb on moss stakes or you can purchase an extension to the plant support that comes with it. It is an 8cm diameter stake that you can buy here.
As a young plant, it should be protected from direct sun as it naturally grows very shady. Once mature, the monstera tolerates direct sunlight. If you are looking for a truly unusual houseplant, look no further. Buy Monstera dubia online!
