Read about Croton | Codiaeum variegatum
Croton brings joy as an indoor plant with its decorative leaves.
There are varieties of croton on the market with a wide range of colors and leaf shapes. The leaves become more intense in color the more light the plant receives.
Appearance.
Croton is an easy-care and effective plant with its decorative leaves. It is excellent in bright and sunny locations. The leaves are green with yellow and red stripes, dots and spots, and the variegation varies depending on the variety and the amount of light. It blooms with creamy white flower clusters.
Care.
Croton thrives at room temperature and should be kept in as much light as possible, but it needs shade during the summer if it is placed in a south-facing window. To keep it healthy in the winter, it is important to keep the air moist, so spray it often.
Investment.
In tropical climates, crotons are used as attractive hedges and patio plants, prized for their eye-catching foliage. They only survive outdoors where temperatures do not normally drop below 10 to 13 °C (50 to 55 °F) in winter. Colder temperatures can cause leaf drop. In colder climates, they are often grown in greenhouses or as houseplants.
Cultivated garden crotons are usually smaller than the wild plants, rarely exceeding 1.8 metres (6 ft) in height. They come in a wide variety of leaf shapes and colours. They are sometimes called Codiaeum variegatum, although this is not botanically distinct from the species and is usually treated as a synonym.
