Tree ferns like Dicksonia antarctica have been around for millions of years and are close relatives of the plants that thrived during the time of the dinosaurs.
Dicksonia antarctica, also known as the 'soft tree fern', is a fern that can reach a trunk height of 5–6 metres. Its impressive leaves can grow up to 2 metres long and form a beautiful crown that can have a total diameter of 3–4 metres.
This tree fern grows slowly, with a stem adding about 5 cm in height per year.
Dicksonia antarctica is partially hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -5 °C without protection. At lower temperatures, the trunk and crown need to be covered to prevent frost damage. There are specimens grown outdoors in the southern parts of our country!
Botanical description
Dicksonia antarctica comes from South East Queensland to South East Australia.

Appearance.
The trunk is not a "real" tree, but consists of a network of roots surrounding a thin rhizome. This unique growth habit makes Dicksonia antarctica a fascinating and distinctive species among tree-like plants.
Care.
This tree fern thrives in partial shade to full shade. Keep the soil moist, especially during warmer months. The trunk should also be watered as the roots absorb water directly from its surface. Well-drained, humus-rich soil is good. Avoid compacted soil that retains too much water. Protect the crown and trunk with straw or burlap during cold winters.
In its natural habitat, this tree fern offers shelter and living space for many small animals and insects. Unlike trees, the trunk consists of a network of roots that over time become hard and support the plant. Take the opportunity to create a piece of Australia's flora in your home!
