Calathea fasciata is actually called Goeppertia fasciata and comes from Brazil.
Maranta are called "prayer plants" because their leaves move and fold upwards at night, much like what happens in prayer. Maranta leaves generally move a lot and quickly compared to many other plants, which means you can really see and experience their movements. They almost feel alive!
Care.
Goeppertia and Calathea thrive best in mild conditions, not too much or too little of anything. They want bright light, but definitely not direct sunlight. Normal room temperatures are optimal, and they prefer an airy substrate that is kept slightly moist but never wet.
Calathea fasciata is one of the easier Maranta plants to keep as a houseplant. Too dry air (e.g. from radiators) can cause dry leaf edges, especially on new leaves.
Note: If the plant gets too much light or during periods of darkness, the leaves may fold or even curl. It may look like it is drying out, but don't be fooled, watering more at this point can actually lead to overwatering.
Botanical description.
The name fasciata means "striped" or "banded". It has a very small distribution area north of the city of Itabuna in the state of Bahia, where it grows in shady forest areas as part of the undergrowth.

Appearance.
The plant grows to around 70 cm tall, and its large, rounded leaves have a beautiful contrast between light and dark stripes – which also gives it its name. The leaves can grow up to 30 cm long and 25 cm wide, and under optimal conditions even larger!
