Pineapple plant, an edible and highly decorative plant
Pineapples belong to the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) and are believed to have originated in the northern part of South America – although this is not entirely certain. There are no wild specimens in nature, as the variety we know today is a cultivated form that has been bred over many generations to improve taste and yield.
Botanical description.
The pineapple plant is believed to originate from the species Ananas ananassoides . It is believed to come from South America.
Fruit
The fruit itself is actually a cluster of small berries grown together with the central part of the flower axis. Botanically, it is called a berry aggregate. The hard, fibrous shell is the remains of the original flower parts – such as sepals and petals.
Care.
If you want to grow pineapples yourself, you need plenty of warmth and patience, especially when the fruit starts to ripen. Even smaller plants can flower and bear fruit, but the size is of course not comparable to those you find in the store. However, they spread a fantastic pineapple scent when they ripen! Like many other bromeliads, the plant forms side shoots after flowering and fruiting. The mother plant itself then stops growing and is replaced by the new shoots, which then continue the cycle.
You will receive a vigorous plant in a 14 cm pot with fruiting bodies. For the fruit to ripen properly, the plant should be kept at at least 21 °C. Buy pineapple plants online!
