Alocasia reticulata is a variant with net-patterned leaves, Alocasia zebrina reticulata, has been observed in cultivation but not in the wild.
Care.
Alocasia zebrina reticulata form thrives in bright but indirect light and should be grown in well-drained soil that is kept slightly moist. Avoid leaving the plant in soggy soil. It can go dormant at temperatures below 12.5°C, so protect it from cold and frost. It should be grown in a transparent pot to easily detect root rot, which is relatively common for the species.
Botanical description.
Alocasia zebrina , described in 1863, is endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines where it grows in humid rainforests at altitudes of 100–400 meters. It thrives in shady environments, often in humus-rich soil.
Alocasia zebrina is characterized by narrow, arrow-shaped leaves and striped petioles. In the past, collectors have tried to give leaf variations within the Alocasia genus their own scientific names, but these have never been officially recognized. According to experts, the correct name for the reticulated forms is Alocasia zebrina reticulata form, in accordance with horticultural rules.
Appearance.
The plant has a short stem and long, zebra-patterned leaf stalks that can grow up to 92 cm. The plant propagates by rhizomes that grow just below the soil surface. Scientific studies show that leaf variations within the species are common and that many commercial names, such as Alocasia 'reticulata', are incorrect because they lack official registration.
At the moment it seems most correct to call the reticulated variant of this plant Alocasia zebrina reticulata form . Buy Alocasia zebrina reticulata form online!
