Leaf begonia with distinctive, spiky leaves from China.
Begonia ferox has deep green leaves covered with small, raised black spines. Historically, Begonia ferox comes from the limestone-rich karst mountains of southern China, where it grows in shady, humid environments. It was discovered relatively recently and has quickly become a sought-after plant.
Botanical description.
Begonia ferox comes from Eastern China in the Guangxi region. The species is believed to be endangered in the wild.
Appearance.
The leaves are deep green and covered in raised black spines, giving the plant a unique, almost sculptural appearance. The leaves can grow up to 20 cm long and have a rough texture.
Begonia ferox grows as a compact bushy plant.
Care.
This begonia thrives best in partial shade and warm conditions.
It originates from a subtropical climate with mild winters of around 10–15°C and very hot summers that often exceed 35°C. In its natural home in the subtropical forests, the trees protect it from direct sun and moderate the high temperatures.
Begonias grow best in a very airy and light substrate. Our peat-free soil mimics their natural environment and is suitable. They also grow well in Sphagnum moss mixed with a little lime gravel.
Regular fertilization is necessary, otherwise the plant often loses most of its leaves. Use a mild, complete fertilizer at half strength about every other week. A fertilizer rich in potassium (e.g. cactus fertilizer) will produce stronger stems and more robust leaves.
A cooler rest period with temperatures around 10–15°C from December to February corresponds to its natural rhythm and is beneficial for the plant's well-being. Buy Begonia ferox online and let this exotic plant adorn your home!
